Gardens

Garden The Gardens at West Hills Baptist are a gift of love for the West Hills Community to enjoy. The Gardens endeavor to reflect our blessings and be an ever present offering of thanks to God for the beauty that surrounds us in East Tennessee.

Below is a brief garden guide. Please feel free to visit our gardens and enjoy the serenity found among the paths and plants.

The Gardens at West Hills Baptist have received neighborhood garden awards and were selected as a part of the 2009 Knoxville Dogwood Arts Festival.

A Guide Through Our Gardens -

• As you walk toward the front doors of our church you will find our courtyard that has the traditional look of an English garden. Near the front walk you’ll see an unusual specimen tree, Cascading Blue Spruce, followed up the walk by several Dwarf Japanese Maples.
To the right of this walk are two beautiful Magnolias that bloom throughout the summer. Under these trees are large rocks where we’ve planted Lenten Roses and many varieties of bulbs – tulips and daffodils.
• Following the stepping stones you may rest on the stone benches beside the Weeping Redbud Tree and behind you will be Camellias and Roses along the chapel wall. The perennial border to your left includes Lilac Trees, Iris in many colors, Roses, Limelight Hydrangeas, Shasta Daisies.
In the corner at the entrance you will find Japanese Yews and Rhododendrons. From the bench to your right you will find Encore Azaleas and Endless Summer Hydrangeas. This garden has color and beauty all through the year.
• Our meadow garden is across the parking lot on the lower border of our property. We have planted in forms of clouds and spikes for a picture perfect view from the street. The spring bulbs of Daffodils will soon be followed by other perennials. As the seasons change you will see yellow and orange Canna Lilies, sweeping Muhly Grasses, Sedums, Spireas, many colors of Iris and Peonies, with a large stand of Red Knock-Out Roses. Feel free to walk across the lawn to get a closer look at this interesting mix of plants that attract bees and butterflies.
• On the Winston Road side of our chapel you will find the entrance to our West Hills Preschool. Here we have a lovely manicured lawn anchored by three Forest Pansy Redbuds. Following the walls, the foundation of evergreen shrubs in varying shades of green creates a garden of quiet beauty. Our preschoolers love to play lawn games here.
• We hope you enjoy your visit to our gardens. You are also welcome to visit and worship with us. Thank you for stopping by our church grounds.

Under the guidance of Sandra Pennington, the volunteers have spent countless hours pulling weeds and planting bulbs.
